Sponsorships: Oaxaca

Silvia Martinez Ramirez, 2 years old

When I first met Silvia, she was selling beaded bracelets and sweets on the streets, along with her Mom and siblings. She came running up to me (her sister, Elizabeth, attended the 'Cameras for Kids' workshop) screaming in Spanish, "I know you! You're my sister's teacher!"

Silvia will be starting kindergarten very soon!

Date of Birth: 25 December 2005

Silvia's Family: Angela Ramirez Juarez (Mom), Silverio Martinez Matra (Dad), Elizabeth (sister), Dulce Maria (sister), Luciana (sister), Andre (brother)

Living Conditions: They are renting the house they live in. 7 people occupy this 2-room aluminium house. There are 3 wooden beds in the house, with no mattreses. Drinking water is purchased in large jugs as water in Oaxaca is not safe for consumption. Outside latrine is shared with 12 others.

Notes: Silvia's Mom, sisters Dulce and Elizabeth sells bracelets at Santo Domingo, earning approximately $200 pesos per week (this is equivalent to $20). Her father works as a carpenter earning $480 pesos a week ($40).

Sponsorship: US$150 per year covering school fees, uniform, shoes and books. Paid up to June 2009.
